Marie-Galante: located 27 miles from Pointe-à-Pitre, Marie Galante Island is the largest of the satellite jslands in the Guadeloupe Archipelago (65 square miles ). With its chaotic past, sparsely traveled roads, and diverse vegetation, this round island is known above all for its sugar cane. It has been famous fur both its sugar cane and rum since the 17th century.
Today, vast sugar cane fields still cover the majority of the Marie Galante Island. As you crisscross the island during your stay, you will come across ancient ox carts filled with freshly cut sugar cane pulled by oxen on their way to the distilleries or factories. You will notice dozens of old windmills in ruins along the countryside, sugar cane factories, aromatic distilleries with smoke coming out of the chimneys, and the massive silhouette of the sugar cane factory in Grande-anse. Some animal farming and fishing complete the economic activity of the island which has opened itself up to tourism.
